Surfing for a Used Car (9/5)

Would you buy a used car from a cyber-salesman?

You can sure do that. But even if the notion of buying a car you've never seen from a person you've never met gives you the nervous quivers, there are ways to use the Internet's World Wide Web to get a better deal when
you buy or sell a used car.

One of the best and most common uses for the Net, when it comes to used cars, is finding a fair buying or selling price. There are a couple of sites that furnish the same same sort of pricing information you'd get from one of the printed buyers' guides you'll find at a bookstore.

Edmund's Automobile Buyer's Guides represent some of the best printed guides to car prices. You can also get that information from the Web. So we'll start our tour of virtual car lots at Edmund's Automobile Buyer's Guides at http://www.edmunds.com/(pound sign)Used.

This page contains plenty of links to pricing data for most used cars. But you'll get a lot more than that here. For instance, there are links for pages that offer down-to-earth information on the best deals in auto insurance, finding the right repair manual for that fixer-upper you just bought, advice on how to buy a used car, lists of models that have been recalled, and plenty of information on tires and safe driving.

You'll also find a commercial for the CD-ROM version of the Edmund's Buyer's Guide, but the advertising is unobtrusive and is a small price to pay for so much free information.

Most people will want at least two price quotes on a used car, so add this page to your used-car hot list: Carsource: Used Car Prices and
Model Summaries at  This is a very complete price list, so even if you plan to shop for a
Maserati Ghibli, you'll find a price here.

Another feature of this page is the model summary. That section gives you data on optional equipment, a summary of pluses and minuses of that particular model, and even a recommendation.

Frankly - with all this free information on the Net - it's difficult to understand why anyone would spend the money for a printed report that offers a more detailed version of the same thing. But the printed reports may be important to some people. For instance, if you're selling a used car, the report may be a way of assuring potential buyers that your price
is a fair one.

If you are in the market for one of these reports, one place to go is the World Square Car Price Net-work at . New-car reports sell for $7 each, used-car reports for $4 each.

Some people will prefer having someone else do all the work and negotiating when they sell or buy a used car. There are sites that offer
that service, but prudent people will spend some time investigating the offer and decide for themselves if it's worthwhile. One of the online buying and selling services is called CarCzar at http://www.carczar.com/ .

If you prefer, you can use that site for pricing information - which is free - and not use CarCzar's for-pay negotiating and locating service.
